When guys hire me for their surprise proposals to their girlfriends, I have a pretty good idea they are the romantic type. Cody takes it to the next level. I'll explain more about that later.
Cody and I discussed various scenarios and he decided on the beach at Perdido Pass in Orange Beach. He told Emily they had reservations for dinner, and would take a nice walk on the beach before dinner. There isn't any cover on the beach at Alabama Point, so I pretended to be there taking pictures of birds. This works out well because I needed to have my long wildlife lens anyway.
When Cody led Emily to the edge of the beach I noticed he grabbed something from his back pocket and I figured this was the ring and the moment. However, he handed her a book. I thought that was odd, because surely this would spoil the surprise. After reading the book, Cody then took a knee and proposed. She was genuinely surprised! By then the gig was up so I introduced myself to Emily. I was curious about the book and the title was "Reasons I want to spend the rest of my life with you." I asked Emily if that was a sign that he was about to propose. Surprisingly she said no because he does this kind of stuff all the time! To my thinking Cody takes romantic gestures to a whole new level if giving his fiance a book about spending the rest of his life with her WASN'T a give away he was about to propose.
Afterwords we took some formal pictures at the Pass. We wrapped up the shoot and started to walk back when a rainbow appeared out of the East. I though that was fitting for this shoot so I setup the gear again and grabbed a few shots. During the summer months I am always hoping for a rainbow during the typical afternoon thunderstorm conditions, and this night I got one on a very special occasion.
