White Pelicans are yearly visitors  from the Midwest, usually arriving in September. They stay in Alabama until the Spring in which case they head back to the Midwest for breeding season. They are noticeably larger than the brown pelicans that call the Gulf Coast home. Unlike the brown pelicans, they do not dive for their fish. Instead, they swim in flocks, herding bait fish into the center. For those that travel the Bayway or Causeway during the Fall and Winter, they can be treated to the site of a flock of white pelicans soaring above Mobile Bay.
