The competition around food sources is fierce for hummingbirds along the Gulf Coast. Many people think hummingbirds are small.fragile birds. They are hardly fragile. They are tough birds and highly competitive when they stake out a food source. They will chase and battle other birds to protect their source. They do this because they have a long winter migration across the Gulf of Mexico. They need calories to make the trip.
