Perdido Pass in Orange Beach is a great place to observe birds. It is located at Alabama Point East and across from the Cobolt Restaurant. After a real estate photography job in Gulf Shores I decided to see what birds were down there on this late October afternoon.
As I walked down the boardwalk I didn't notice any birds of prey like osprey active in the area. I did notice some great blue heron hanging around some people that were fishing. They do this hoping to get an easy treat. I made my way down the jetties and the smaller shorebirds were active in the surf.

I noticed one particular sanderling had a different feeding technique. Normally sanderling wait for the waves to come ashore and then get into the receding waves sifting the sand for a quick meal. This particular sanderling picked out a spot on the beach and waited for the waves to pass it. It had it's back to the shoreline so when the waves receded it could see whatever tasty morsels the waves disturbed.

Just about every time I visit the beach I see a great blue heron. It is difficult for me not to pass a portrait of the heron when I see one that is accustom to being around people. I love the detail in their faces and they remind me of the old man portraits with the weathered face as their is so much detail in the face of a great blue heron.
