Purple Martins : Lazy Sunday Afternoon in Fairhope, Alabama
I stopped by the purple martin colony at the Fairhope Municipal Pier on Sunday, May 20 to gets some good action shots of the birds flying around. However, it looked like it was nap and grooming time. I did see a few flying around but the colony was subdued. Every birdhouse was like this. There were a few around each one but for the most part they were just hanging out grooming themselves.
In the past when I have attempted photographing the bird it's usually just before sunset. Considering their diet consists mostly of insects it makes sense they would conserve their energy on a lazy afternoon and wait until the insects and flies and come out.
