The Naval Live Oaks in Gulf Breeze is an area I have wanted to fish so I finally made a trip to Florida to fish it. I have done a few portrait sessions in this area and it has always looked fishy. This morning trip to the Gulf Island National Seashore didn't disappoint. 

I started off catching a puffer fish. I ended up catching two for the day. I was surprised at how hard they fought as I first thought I had a young white trout on the line. After I caught the puffer, I started trolling to deeper water and started catching speckled trout. They were all dinks except for two that were keeper size. I ended up catching 7 speckled trout and two puffer fish. 

The bait used was an Unfair Lure Rip n Slash 70. There are grass beds all over the flats with bald patches. The water was very clear. With a Southeast wind that day, my technique was to start in deep water and then let the winds take me back to shore. I would cast into the bald patches and work the lure through the grass beds. When my drift took me closer to shore, I would then peddle back to deeper water while trolling.
