Hurricane Micheal caused catastrophic damage along the Florida Emerald Coast but spared the Perdido Key area. One of the side effects however are the tidal pools created on the beach from the storm surge. These small tidal pools helped give this family portrait a dramatic look during the twilight hour of this family portrait session.

Family beach sunset photography is very popular on the Gulf Coast. The hour before sunset is the best time for portraits because the sun isn't too bright and the temperatures are not as hot. Believe it or not, a bright sunny day can be a problem for family beach portraits. Sand acts like a huge reflector and that makes for very squinty eyes.

This is why I like to use portable studio lights on the beach. Eyes are the most important part of a successful portrait and if the subject is blinded by bright light the subject just doesn't look comfortable. After sunset the light gets lower and the strain on eyes is much less. The skies also get a mixture of blues and oranges that add color to the portraits. If you have had family portraits taken while vacationing in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Perdido Key before and want some different please contact me for more information.

It was an overcast day which meant it was great for portraits. Using portable studio lights gave the picture a bit of a punch with a dramatic flare. This was taken after sunset when the natural light is easy on the eyes and the skies are there most colorful. If it is a bright day the sun can be very harsh, especially with younger children. During the hot summer months having portrait sessions after sunset can produce dramatic looking portraits and children are much more comfortable because it isn't as hot and humid.
